THE EASTERN AFRICA DOCTORAL COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THE DISCONNECT BETWEEN RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITIES AND INDUSTRY NEEDS
Nairobi Kenya – Friday March 28th 2017
The Doctoral Association of Eastern Africa (DAEA) the first and only truly academic association that brings together the doctoral community in the region, will hold its second anniversary celebrations on Friday March 31ST, 2017 from 4.00pm at The United Kenya Club – State House Road, Nairobi.
The event themed “Using Research to Solve Societal Problems”is a culmination of many activities that DAEA has engaged in since its inception in March 2015. Renowned Kenyan scholar Prof.RatemoMichieka, the founding Vice-Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology former director-general of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) will be the chief guest.
Concerned by the growing disconnect between academia, research, industry and the larger society, the low completion rates of doctoral students and the inordinately long time taken to complete doctoral programmes, DAEA has been fighting for an improvement in the quality of research and doctoral programs by infusing and nurturing rigor, vigor, breadth and depth in doctoral and post-doctoral research in the region, as well as championing better linkages between the academia and industry.
To date, DAEA has organized five academic colloquia, conducted a survey on doctoral students, hosted a theses retreat for doctoral students, organized a youth empowerment forum, and put together various publications among them the DAEA Guidelines on Doctoral Research and Supervision.
Academic research is often accused of being ponderous, narrow and detached from the real world, but the coming together of the academia, researchers and industry and the building of a strong community of doctoral students and doctoral holders is expected to improve the research output, contribute to solutions of societal problems, inform development and contribute to policy development.
At the event, DAEA will also launch the inaugural edition of “The University Journal” a multidisciplinary international journal published by DAEA whose focus is applied research. The journal has already been issued with The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
